Picking the Right Toothbrush
A lot of people get this first part wrong, right off the bat. It all starts with picking the right type of toothbrush.
I know, it is actually super hard to do. The problem is, you go into the store and there are literally one million different type of toothbrushes to choose from. So what do you do? You stick to the Soft Toothbrushes and ignore all the others. The gentle ones are ok too, they are just a different way of saying “soft”.
The reason you want a soft toothbrush is because you want the bristles to flex and bend in between your teeth and all the different nooks and crannies, to pull out and remove any food particles that have built up there. A harder bristle toothbrush won’t flex and bend as much and therefor it will miss a lot of the particles that you want to remove.
Another reason that you do not want a hard bristle brush is because your teeth and gums are fragile. And hard bristle can damage the enamel on your teeth. A hard bristle can also injure or damage your gums. This type of brush is also more likely to cause bleeding of your gums when you brush them as well.

Don’t Brush Your Teeth So Hard
So many people get this one wrong. It’s natural and you are probably brushing your teeth to hard, to aggressively, unless you are really making an effort not to.
As we stated earlier, your teeth, the enamel on your teeth, and your gums are fragile. There are also a lot of blood vessels in your gums. So you do not want, and you do not need, to brush your teeth really hard. Another aspect to understand is that hard bristles can actually break down the enamel on your teeth. This is not good.
You just need to do a good and thorough job of brushing your teeth, not a hard and aggressive job.
Be kind to your mouth and gums and teeth! Pick a soft toothbrush and brush gently!
Slow Down, Don’t Go So Fast
This is piggy backing on the earlier theme of this article. You want to slow down the speed at which you brush your teeth. Most people are in a hurry and they brush really hard and really quickly.
Have you ever used an electric toothbrush like a Sonicare? Did you notice that the Sonicare brush, one you hit the “On” button, that the brushing duration lasts for two minutes? There is a reason for that.
It is pretty standard advice that you need to take about two minutes to thoroughly clean your teeth. Most people only brush for about 45 seconds. You can do better than that. Take your time. Go for a full two minutes. Think about it. If you brush your teeth in the morning and in the evening, that is only a total of four minutes of brushing your teeth. You definitely have four minutes a day to do a proper job of maintaining your oral health.
Slow down and do it right and you’ll be happy you did.
Replace Your Toothbrush Often
This is another common problem. Most folks hold on to their toothbrush way too long. It becomes worn out and it becomes nasty. You know what I’m talking about. We have all done this. We are all guilty of holding on to the toothbrush way too long.
And it makes sense, because we don’t think about it. We only think about the toothbrush.
So do yourself a favor. Go into your bathroom right now and look at your toothbrush. Does it look all beat up? Do the bristles look all frayed, like they have given up? If so definitely change your toothbrush.
If your toothbrush looks like that, you’ve gone far too long without changing to a better brush.
You should change a lot more often.
